How to choose the right LiDAR scanner

Short answer: Choose a LiDAR scanner based on four things:

  • Where you scan
  • What the point cloud becomes
  • Whether it must sit in a coordinate system
  • The accuracy your deliverable needs

For most jobs indoors and in tight spaces a handheld SLAM scanner is enough. Large sites call for longer range, and millimetre detail calls for a tripod mode.

Four questions to answer first

  • Environment: Indoors, outdoors, underground or under tree canopy? SLAM scanners work without GPS; RTK GNSS is used where there is open sky.
  • Deliverable: Point clouds (.las, .e57, .ply, .pts), 2D floor plans, scan-to-BIM, contours or volumes. The deliverable drives both scanner and software.
  • Coordinate system: Does the point cloud need to sit in SWEREF 99 or a local system? Choose a model with an RTK module or GNSS, or plan for control points.
  • Accuracy: FJDynamics specifies about 1–1.2 cm relative accuracy after processing for most handheld models, and 4 mm @ 10 m in tripod mode for the T1.

Handheld SLAM, tripod or hybrid?

Handheld SLAM scanner: You walk through the area while the scanner continuously calculates its position with SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping). It is the fastest way to document interiors, plant rooms, tunnels and forests, with no setups.

Terrestrial laser scanner (tripod): The scanner stands still on a tripod and measures from several setups that are registered together. High local accuracy, but more time in the field.

Hybrid: FJD Trion T1 combines mobile scanning with a tripod mode in one workflow – fast coverage of large areas and higher local accuracy where needed. Read more in SLAM or terrestrial laser scanning?

What accuracy does the deliverable need?

Manufacturers usually quote two values: relative accuracy (how well points agree with each other) and absolute accuracy (how well they agree with a coordinate system). FJDynamics specifies 1–1.2 cm relative and 3 cm absolute accuracy after processing for the P2, P2 Vision+, S2 and V4e. The T1 in tripod mode is specified at 4 mm @ 10 m.

Real results depend on site geometry, walking path and processing. Plan loops and enough overlap.

Must the point cloud be georeferenced?

If data must go into SWEREF 99 or a local grid you need either a scanner with an RTK module or GNSS, or separately surveyed control points. The P2 offers RTK as an option, the S2 has RTK built in, and the X1, T1 and V100F have built-in GNSS.

RTK accuracy describes how precisely the scanner's position is fixed, for the S2 8 mm horizontal and 15 mm vertical (+ 1 ppm). It decides how well the point cloud sits in the coordinate system. How well the points agree with each other is set by the scanner's own accuracy, about 1.2 cm relative after processing.

What affects the price?

The price of a professional LiDAR scanner is mainly driven by range, point rate, accuracy and which sensors are included (cameras, thermal camera, RTK/GNSS). Accessories, post-processing software licences, delivery and training add to it. Read more in How much does a LiDAR scanner cost?

Norrpoint quotes every scanner for the job at hand, so you don't pay for capacity you won't use. We usually reply within 1–2 business days.

Think about total ownership

  • Training: Norrpoint includes online operator training with every scanner.
  • Support in Swedish: Help with configuration and workflows when field data doesn't come out as planned.
  • Accessories: Extra batteries, vehicle or backpack mounts and an RTK module.
  • Software: Licences for post-processing and sharing point clouds in FJD Trion Model.

Choosing a LiDAR scanner: FAQ

A handheld SLAM scanner measures while you walk and needs no setups, which makes it fast in tight spaces, tunnels and forests. A terrestrial laser scanner measures from a tripod across several setups and gives high local accuracy but takes longer. The FJD Trion T1 combines both ways of working.

No. SLAM works without GPS – indoors, underground and under tree canopy. RTK GNSS is needed when the point cloud must be georeferenced directly to a coordinate system outdoors. The P2 offers RTK as an option, the S2 has RTK built in, and the X1, T1 and V100F have built-in GNSS.

FJDynamics specifies about 1–1.2 cm relative and 3 cm absolute accuracy after processing for most handheld models. If you need millimetre detail, the tripod mode of the FJD Trion T1 gives 4 mm @ 10 m.

Point clouds export as .las, .e57, .ply and .pts. In FJD Trion Model you can classify, denoise and produce floor plans, contours and CAD/BIM deliverables.

The FJD Trion C1 is built for indoor floor plans, with built-in laser measurement ±3 mm and DXF export. If the point cloud will also be used for BIM, the FJD Trion P2 is a good fit.
