PT Surveyor Indonesia measures volume and density for state energy companies, among other work. At Indonesia Power Plant near Labuan Ratu the coal volume is needed for accounts, loans, purchasing, and staffing.
They used to run terrestrial laser scanning (TLS). The kit is heavy to ship, each setup has to be levelled like a total station, and registration needs at least three black-and-white targets. A single station could take 20 minutes to set. The whole pile took seven hours.
S1 in the hand, the cloud live on the phone
With the FJD Trion S1 the surveyor connects, gets a link, and walks the pile. 320,000 points per second and 0.8–2 cm accuracy, with no tripod round. Surveyor Arief called it simpler, lighter, and more effective. The live cloud on the phone showed coverage while walking.
The result: 19 minutes instead of 7 hours — 401 minutes saved. TLS still reaches farther and denser in some settings, but for stockpiles the handheld weight and time win. The S1 can also ride a UAV when the pile is hard to walk.
